From Proto-Athabaskan *qʼəš ~ *qʼəɣəšʷ (alder). Distantly cognate with Ket ӄыʼй (qɨˀj, birch bark).

Perhaps this word is related to the root -KʼǪSH (to be sour, be rancid (of color and oil)).
