Etymology
- (Drimmelen) First attested as De Blauwe Sluis in 1838-1857. Derived from blauw (“blue”) and sluis (“lock, sluice”). Compare Blauwesluis, Rode Sluis, Zwartsluis and Zwartsluisje.
- (Steenbergen) First attested as bij de Blauwe Sluijs in 1573-1576. Derived from blauw (“blue”) and sluis (“lock, sluice”). The lock was constructed using Namur bluestone; the settlement was thus named after the colour of the lock. Compare Blauwesluis, Rode Sluis, Zwartsluis and Zwartsluisje.
