    Borrowed from Latin chthonius (underworldly), itself borrowed from Ancient Greek χθόνῐος (khthónĭos, underground, subterranean). Further from χθών (khthṓn, the ground, soil), from Proto-Hellenic *kʰtʰṓn and Proto-Indo-European *dʰéǵʰōm (ground).

    Coined by German entomologist and arachnologist Carl Ludwig Koch in 1843.
