Cynara cardunculus

Translingual

Proper noun

Cynara cardunculus f

  1. A taxonomic species within the family Asteraceae – cardoon.

Usage notes

  • Until recently, artichokes were considered a separate species, Cynara scolymus, and this name was reserved for cardoons. But genetic research has shown that artichokes are just a kind of cardoon. In older references, Cynara cardunculus usually refers to cardoons: the wild plant and those varieties grown for their edible leaf stalks.
