Reconstruction:Latin/ericionem

This Latin entry contains reconstructed terms and roots. As such, the term(s) in this entry are not directly attested, but are hypothesized to have existed based on comparative evidence.

Latin

Etymology

From ērīcius +‎ -ōnem.

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /eriˈd͡zoːne/

Noun

*ērīciōnem m (plural *ērīciōnēs) (Proto-Western-Romance)

  1. hedgehog

Reconstruction notes

Relatively late formation, considering that it lacks the otherwise-expected weakening and loss of /i/ in this position. Apparently originated in the north, where it eliminated the reflexes of ērīcius, and propagated southwards.
