Etymology

Probably from a Proto-Indo-European *h₃éd(s)gʷ-o-s (“knot”), and cognate with Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hádᶻgas (“knot (in a tree); branch”).[1] The PIE root is further suggested to be connected to Proto-Indo-European *h₃ósdos (“branch”) through metathesis, perhaps ultimately deriving from *h₃ésth₁ (“bone”).[2]
