Etymology
From Proto-Indo-European *(s)tewd- (“to hit”). The closest cognate is Sanskrit तुदति (tudati, “to strike, hit”).[1]
The preterite stem *kera- is suppletive and comes from Proto-Indo-European *ḱerh₂- (“to break”).[2]
