From Proto-Indo-European *krewH-dʰh₁-e-ti, from Proto-Indo-European *krewH- (to heap up) and cognate with Lithuanian kráuju, kráuti (to put on top of each other) and Proto-Slavic *krỳti (to cover).[1][2]
