Etymology
From Proto-Balto-Slavic *krauˀ-, from Proto-Indo-European *krewH- (“to pile, cover”). Cognate with Latvian kŗaut (“to heap, pile”), Proto-Slavic *krỳti (“to cover”); outside of Balto-Slavic, compare also Proto-Germanic *hreudaną (“to cover”).[1]
