Etymology

From Proto-Balto-Slavic *krauˀ-, from Proto-Indo-European *krewH- (to pile, cover). Cognate with Latvian kŗaut (to heap, pile), Proto-Slavic *krỳti (to cover); outside of Balto-Slavic, compare also Proto-Germanic *hreudaną (to cover).[1]
