Etymology
According to Orel, from Proto-Indo-European *dr̥-to-s, a participle from *der- (“to split, tear”); cognate with Latvian dìrst (“to poop, shit”).[1] Note that Kroonen prefers to reconstruct the Germanic as *turzdaz; see there for more.
