Proto-Germanic

Etymology

Seemingly from Proto-Indo-European *dr̥s-dʰh₁-os, from a root *ders- (to excrete) + *dʰeh₁- (to do, put, place). Compare Latvian dìrst (to shit).[1] The root *ders-, apparently only attested in Baltic and Germanic, may be an extension of the root *der- (to split, tear); see also *teraną (to tear, snatch).
