Ultimately from Proto-Afroasiatic *rVw- (predator; usually a large feliform). Cognate with Egyptian


(rw, lion), Nefusa wär (lion), Zenaga war (lion), Somali aar (lion), Proto-Central Chadic *ruw- (hyena, wild cat), Mubi ʔórúwà (lion) and Tumak ǝ̄rǝ̄w (leopard).
