From Proto-Balto-Slavic *(s)kersas, from Proto-Indo-European *(s)kert- (“to cut”), extension of Proto-Indo-European *(s)ker- (“to cut”). Cognate with Latvian šķērss (transverse, cross), Lithuanian sker̃sas (transverse, cross), Old Prussian kērscha, kirscha (transverse, cross).
