Etymology

Denominal from *bičь (lash) +‎ *-ěti. In modern descendants, inchoative variant in *-ovati is more widely attested.

Onomatopoeic semantics is attested as secondary meaning of Slovene bīčati (to squeak, to tweet), Bulgarian би́цам (bícam, to make noise with one's cheeks).
