  1. from Proto-Indo-European *sterh₁- (stiff) as Proto-Germanic *staraz (stiff), Latin strēnuus (brisk), from which root with extension *(s)treg- (rigid, stiff) from which Proto-Germanic *strakaz (firm, rigid)
  2. from Proto-Indo-European *sterh₃- (stretching)
