From Proto-Austroasiatic *ɓaːr (or some variant presented by Proto-Palaungic *ləʔaːr, Khasi ar, Central Nicobarese [Nancowry] âṅ; Shorto reconstructed Pre-Mon-Khmer *biʔaar). Compare also Santali ᱵᱟᱨ (bar). An /h/ appeared in a similar manner to hắn.
