Uncertain; possibly from Proto-Germanic *hwahtlǭ, from Proto-Indo-European *kʷóǵ⁽ʰ⁾-tl-eh₂, from *kʷeǵ⁽ʰ⁾- (“to flee”), cognate with Latin quaccola (“quail”), cocturnīx, cōturnīx (“quail”). Perhaps related to Old Norse *hvekka (“to be startled”), Latin conquinīscō (“to crouch down”), Proto-Slavic *čeznǫti (“to disappear”). Apparently reborrowed from Latin as *kwattulā.
