Etymology

First attested as van sconebeke in 1341. Compound of schoon (“clean, free of weeds”) and beek (“brook, stream”). The toponym was created by officials of the Prince-Bishopric of Utrecht in order to lure settlers to the village. Compare Bonrepas, Kockengen, Koekange, Schoonoord and Wijngaarden.
