From cy- +‎ ysgod, from Middle Welsh (y)sgawd, from Proto-Celtic *skātu, from Proto-Indo-European *(s)ḱeh₃- (compare English shadow). Cognate with Breton skeud, Cornish skeus, Irish scáth.^[1]
