From Middle Cornish clethe, from Proto-Brythonic *klėðɨβ̃, from Proto-Celtic *kladiwos. Cognate with Breton klezeñv, Gaulish *kladyos (whence Latin gladius (see there for further descendants)), Irish claíomh, Manx cliwe, Scottish Gaelic claidheamh, and Welsh cleddyf.
