A variant form of scaitheadh (“cutting, lopping off”), from Middle Irish scothad, verbal noun of scothaid (“to cut, lop off”), from Middle Irish scoth (“point, edge”), from Proto-Celtic *skutā, from Proto-Indo-European *skewt- (“to cut”) (compare Lithuanian skùsti (“to shave”)).[1][2]
