From sviests (“butter”) +‎ maize (“bread”), probably a calque from German Butterbrot; cf. also Russian бутербро́д (buterbród).

1. open sandwich (a slice of bread with butter, or also with other toppings, like sausage, cheese, etc.); by extension, also closed sandwiches

   ēst sviestmaizi ― to eat a sandwich

   sakārtot sviestmaizes uz šķīvja ― to arrange sandwiches on a plate

   paņemt ceļā līdzi sviestmaizes ― to take sandwiches along on a trip
