Theoretically from Proto-Germanic *swelijô (sister's husband), from Proto-Indo-European *swél-(i)yo-n- or *swé-l-y, though these reconstructions are uncertain. Cognate with Ancient Greek ἀέλιοι (aélioi, brothers-in-law) (prefixed with *sm̥-).
