From Middle Dutch wierooc, from Old Dutch wīrōc, from *wīh (“holy”) + rouc, *rōk (“smoke”), equivalent to Proto-Germanic *wīhaz + *raukiz. Compare German Weihrauch. The diphthongisation of -ī- (as in related wijden) was hindered by the following -r-.
