(Caoutchouc) (1530) Dérivé de rub (« frotter »), avec le suffixe -er[1]. Apparait avec le sens de « ce qui sert à frotter » ; (1788) sens de « gomme pour effacer » (il faut frotter avec la gomme pour effacer), par la suite appliqué au caoutchouc et, par extension de sens, aux objets faits en cette matière.
