Greece introduced the current system of National Roads on 9 July 1963.[1] The latest state of research on OpenStreetMap indicates that the National Highway system received a major update in the mid-1990s, when they were divided into three subcategories (primary, secondary or tertiary network).[2]
This article describes how to map one of the most complex system of trunk roads in Europe. The nature of the system required great attention to detail, so you might want to put the kettle on.
Mapping notes
Greece is not a big country like India or the United States, so there should be only one relation for each National Road, even if it is split into parts (like the ΕΟ1ΕΟ1).[a]
At most primary destinations (see tables below), the national road should ignore ring roads and bypasses, and either go through the city centre (like the ΕΟ39 in Sparta), or as close as practically possible due to pedestrianisation and one-way systems (such as the ΕΟ7/ΕΟ72/ΕΟ74 complex in Tripoli). However, there are some case-by-case exceptions (such as the ΕΟ3 bypassing Florina and Livadeia).

! Required | Keep the name as simple as possible, like the N65N65 in the Netherlands or Highway 65Highway 65 in Ontario, Canada. Use int_name=* for the transliteration, and name:[xx]=* for translations (replace [xx] with the language code).

|
! Required | If the Register of National Roads (1998) has a different number for the entire length of the relation (e.g. the ΕΟ9αΕΟ9α), set ref:esye=* to that number. If a National Road does not have a number that is used in practice (e.g. the ΕΟ102ΕΟ102), ignore ref=* and use noref=yes instead.

|
‽ Important | The route description does not belong to official_name=*, because the present route does not always match the 1963 or 1998 description (e.g. the unfinished ΕΟ85): use description:el-Latn=* for the transliteration, and description:[xx]=* for translations (replace [xx] with the language code).

‽ Important | A source for the road numbers is important, due to the complicated evolution of the National Road network, and the prevalence of fake road numbers on Wikipedia, such as the alleged Α4 (in Central Greece) and ΕΟ23 (in Corfu). |

Ways of National Highways belong to the relevant relation with one of the following roles. When done correctly, JOSM should be able to arrange all members correctly.
| Role | oneway=*

|---|---|

yes for one-way roads, or no for a split section, if going with the direction of the way.
