This tag allows to specify a surface of just cycleway. It is useful for highway=* tagged with cycleway=* where just surface=* is not sufficient. It is also useful for merged footway with cycleway with different surfaces tagged as one way - for example:

On roads with multiple cycleways, the variants cycleway:left:surface=*, cycleway:right:surface=*, and cycleway:both:surface=* are often useful.

This tagging is a special case of a more general rule for defining attributes of cycleways – see Key:cycleway#Supplementary details.

Object that may be tagged as two separate highway=footway and highway=cycleway, each with its own surface=* or as one way that requires =asphalt for specifying surface
