The key =* is used in conjunction with a node highway=crossing for pedestrians, to specify whether there are markings not in the roadway center, but at the edge of the road to prevent cars from blocking the access from the sidewalk to the pedestrian crossing.

Values

The values left, right and both refer to the direction of the line the crossing node is located on (see also Left and right). It should therefore be ensured that there are no multiple lines with different directions meeting at such a crossing node.

Example

The example shows buffer markings on both sides of the roadway, from a driver's perspective, there are no markings in the driving zone.
