  • 1,800 Shoshone set out from the Wind River Indian Reservation in Wyoming in one of the last great buffalo hunts.[1]

  • Jessie James and the James-Younger Gang rob a train in Gads Mill, Missouri. They examine men's hands and allow those with callouses to keep their money; they won't steal from the working class.[2]

March

  • John Younger of the James-Younger gang assaults a couple of undercover Pinkertons and is killed.[2]

July

  • General George Armstrong Custer leads a thousand people into the Black Hills in search of gold, in violation of 1868 Treaty of Laramie.[3]

October

December

The James-Younger Gang robs another train, this one in Muncie, Kansas. They make off with over $30,000.[2]
