Having fallen in love with Gail Wagner, Romito acted for her sake with each killing. Her obsession with a strange, apple-shaped object was the primary cause of each of these. Each of the victims had fallen under the apple's sway, driving them to act or prepare to act against Wagner. Given his love for her, Romito felt no compunctions about protecting her.
It was his murder of Jesten that drew Lyle Grand to the search for the apple, culminating in his cooperation with Enoch, Grand's death, and the relic's containment.
