Supernatural Tolerance

Supernatural Tolerance is the ability of supernatural beings in the Chronicles of Darkness to resist supernatural abilities--their own or those of a completely different type of being.

Overview

A character's supernatural tolerance is determined by the "power stat" of their template: Rank for ephemeral beings, Blood Potency for vampires, Gnosis for mages, Wyrd for changelings, etc. Mortals, by definition, do not have a supernatural tolerance. [1]

Supernatural tolerance is usually figured into the roll to resist a supernatural effect, if that effect can be resisted. For instance, if a vampire attempts to use Dominate, the target contests with Resolve + Supernatural Tolerance (if they have it). Sometimes, however, an effect that is supernatural in origin does not actually count as supernatural. A Beast imposing its Lair Traits on a scene may manifest actual light, heat, acid, etc. and these affect anyone else in the scene as they usually would, without contesting the roll.[2] A vampire using Vigor, similarly, uses the power on himself rather than on the person he's punching, so there is no roll to contest.

Supernatural tolerance is also used in a Clash of Wills roll when two powers would have conflicting or contradictory results. The exact dice pool varies depending on the powers involved, but it always involves supernatural tolerance, representing the relative power levels of the two beings involved.

Demon: The Descent

The Unchained are unusual in that they may use their Cover in place of their Primum as a supernatural tolerance stat, if they are the target of a supernatural attack while in cover. For a demon in Demonic Form, or for a Clash of Wills rolls, the demon uses Primum as normal. [3]
