матур

Bashkir

Etymology

Cognate with Tatar матур (matur, beautiful), Chuvash маттур (mattur, strong, stout; dextrous; brave; beautiful) and dialectal Kazakh матор (mator, beautiful). Presumably, ultimately from Proto-Turkic *bagatur (hero).[1]

Irregular nasalization and preservation of a roundness-disharmonic high vowel could be indicative of some sort of reloaning scenario.

Doublet of батыр (batır, hero, brave).
