Reconstruction:Proto-Turkic/bagatur
Proto-Turkic
Etymology
Cognate to Proto-Mongolic *baxatur and Persian بهادر (bahâdor)[1][2][3][4], the ultimate source is disputed.[1] Doerfer, Eren, Räsänen, Doğan and Erdal suggest a Mongolic origin.[1][3][4] Clauson rather suggests a Hunnic origin, showing a Chinese transcription of the name of the second chanyu, "Mao-tun", which he suggests was read as "moğ-tun", as the etymon. He also argues that the word was originally a proper noun, but later transitioned into a noun in Mongolian [5]
