стремить

Russian

Etymology

Inherited from Proto-Slavic *strьměti. Cognate with Old East Slavic стрьмление (strĭmlenije), Slovene strmẹ́ti (to stare) (tonal orthography), Czech strmět (to rise), Slovak strmieť (to rise), Polish trzmić (to stick out). Related to Proto-Slavic *strьmъ (steep). Per Vasmer, possibly derived from the vowel assimilation found in Proto-Slavic *strьmь, *strьmьnъ (compare стрём (strjom, fear), стрёмный (strjómnyj, scary)), from Proto-Slavic *strъm-.
