Two main origins:
- Borrowed from Czech and Slovak Toman, a hypocoristic form of the personal name Tomáš.
- Reduced Anglicized form of Irish Ó Tuamáin (“descendant of Tuamán”), a diminutive of tuama (“grave, tomb, burial mound”).
