Invidia Caul
Invidia Caul is a Tremere geneticist who controls Kiowa Xenogenetics, a scientific research facility at a ranch on the Kiowa National Grassland in New Mexico, and also a Sire of the Courier if they're Tremere. She combines Blood Sorcery and advanced science, including cloning. Invidia is working on creating genetically engineered blood substitutes for Kindred to feed on, and believes that science can provide alternatives to regular Kindred feeding and may actually be one of the most game-changing Kindred as her cloned blood and hybridized blood is stuff that vampires can feed on.
Biography
Little is known about Caul's unlife before establishing KXG. She started in a major New York chantry, serving as an "errand girl" to a far more powerful Tremere mage (most likely, Jasper Knowles, her mentor). After the destruction of Vienna chantry at the hands of Second Inquisition, she gathered as many resources as she could and fled into the desert.
Caul tends to use Latin enchantments before she uses her more impressive examples of Blood Sorcery. However she also slips into Latin when she's pissed, which leads to an amusing moment when fighting her where the Courier thinks she's prepping an attack, but then realises that they're in the clear and she's just cursing their name. Her go-to attack is shooting our streams of corrosive vitae from her hands.
The Tremere is actually irascible and ruthless - she kills her own employees just to slake her anger, and once Blood bonded a Traditionalist mage (by the name of Giselle), slowly breaking her mind and will.
At the end of her chapter, Invidia can fake her destruction (using a clone of herself to accomplish this) and may also potentially join the Anarchs if the Courier offers an alliance with Julian Sim. If the Courier refuses to help Invidia fake her own destruction, and she does not enter an alliance with Julian, then Invidia may be destroyed at the hands of the Courier instead, or the Courier can sabotage her facility. Finally, the Courier can persuade Invidia to drop the fight and simply leave her for Prince Lettow to deal with.
Invidia Caul can teach the following disciplines: Animalism, Auspex, Blood Sorcery (other funny thing about interacting with Invidia Caul is that, after drinking her blood, actually mastering this discipline means digging into 35,000 pages of grimoires), Dominate.
Trivia
- After helping Invidia cut ties with the Camarilla and get away unnoticed via faking her destruction, Vani Anand (if ghouled) will inform the Courier that Invidia has moved to Seattle to carry on her genetic research, leading to speculation that she may cameo in Bloodlines 2.
- A Ventrue, one of the former Prince's childer, once tried to diablerise Dr. Caul, which at the end got him destroyed.
- As any true scientist, Invidia always takes any opportunity to learn and study something new outside of her area of expertise. For example, if the Courier are Ravnos, she'll allow them to wander from KXG (but not far) and even arrange some places to rest, but they'll have to carry a special data-gathering device with them - apparently, Dr. Caul wants to study Ravens' clan weakness by examining their moving patterns.
- Is so fond of some of her occult items that cannot bring herself to destroy them even in Bestial rage.
- Kiowa Xenogenetics most likely named after Kiowa people.
- In Latin, invidia is the sense of envy, a "looking upon" associated with the evil eye, from "invidere", "to look against, to look in a hostile manner." Invidia ("Envy") is one of the Seven Deadly Sins in Christian belief.
- Caul (also spelled Kaul, Koul, Kol or Cool) is a surname used by the Kashmiri Pandit community in India.
