Mutant
Mutants, also known as the Grotesque, are a Clade of Deviants whose Variations allow them to survive almost anything.
Overview
Most humans subjected to a procedure meant to trigger Divergence simply die: their bodies reject the implants, the infusion of energy destroys them, the foreign DNA becomes a pernicious cancer that consumes from the inside. Mutants, instead, adapt in whatever way necessary to survive. Their Divergence doesn't go the way their Progenitor intended, but it keeps them alive nonetheless.
Progenitors frequently debate what it is that allows Mutants to react this way — is it something in their DNA? Something about the specific stimulus? Something else entirely? This makes it difficult to reliably create Mutants, compared to other Clades.
Conspiracies value Mutants precisely for their unpredictable nature, though that's also what makes the Grotesque dangerous. Holding a Mutant by force is almost never worth the cost, but some conspiracies are able to recruit Mutants by offering more carrots than sticks. At any moment, thought, even the most coddled Devoted could potentially turn Renegade, and no amount of preparation can fully defend against them.
Traits
Mutants don't favor any one class of Attributes or Merits, and their Scars don't follow any obvious patterns. They are the multi-tool of Deviants, ready for anything, but also some of the most human, retaining some vestiges of who they were before the change.
