Etymology

In the original context of the Gongyang as exegesis of the Spring and Autumn Annals, the character () was typically used as a verb meaning "to magnify; to aggrandize; to praise", as in the following passage:

元年正月。」……正月大一統 [Traditional Chinese poetry, trad.]
元年正月。」……正月大一统 [Traditional Chinese poetry, simp.]
From: Commentary of Gongyang, c. 206 BCE– 9 CE
“yuánnián chūn wáng zhēngyuè.”...... Hé yán hū wáng zhēngyuè? Dà yītǒng yě. [Pinyin]
(It is written) "Year One, spring, The King's First Month." … What is meant by the very mentioning of "The King's First Month"? To magnify Unity.

In current usage is re-analysed as the modifier of 一統.
